Tyre Designations and Constructions

  • By CTO Admin

4x4 drive tyres are manufactured in countless different sizes and tread styles, although there are only a few distinct types of carcass construction.

The main three groups of 4WD tyres readily available today are:

  • Radial Passenger
  • Radial Light Truck
  • Crossply

Crossply tyres and Radial tyres are made using completely different methods, and their internal structure affects the performance of the tyre at every level. If you are looking for dedicated off road tyres or similar then Crossply vs Radial might be a decision that you have to make.

Radial passenger tyres are commonly found on brand new vehicles and have highway orientated tread patterns.  They feature light construction consistent with ride comfort and low noise levels.  Some Passenger radials may identify as XL (extra load) where they have slightly higher load ratings.

Radial light truck tyres are the most familiar modern 4X4 tyre sold around the world commonly denoted by "LT" after the tyre size. The light truck tyre build has heavier grade materials and structure designed for higher loads.  Heavy duty build treatment equates to a tyre that is more suited to off road work with its extra belting and sidewall plys.

Crossply tyres are used for the most rigorous and severe conditions.  This includes ultra-high loading and difficult off highway circumstances commonly found in the agriculture and construction industries.  Popular extreme use 4X4 tyres such as aggressive competition rubber is usually produced as crossply for strength and durability.

Are cheaper tyres just as good?

If your tyres are an unrecognized and cheap brand then you can be sure the manufacturer has less material in the tyre build.  Easy to check for yourself, entry level tyres have less tread depth and low-quality rubber blend simply because the tyre construction isn't good enough to support decent tread elements. The tread area will "crown" and the tyre will wear unevenly because the weak belting within the tyre carcass. Cornering, braking, tread life and safety will be compromised leading to failure and disappointment.

Quality radial light truck tyres have higher grade materials used in their construction.  Premium steel belts are placed across the casing creating a uniform base for deeper tread elements.  The belts help support the tread and the sidewall remains more compliant increasing ride quality.  The handling is much improved in cornering and braking due to better materials and manufacturing standards.  Fuel economy is enhanced with less rolling resistance in synthetic, coupled silica, compounds.  Efficient transfer of power through superior, high denier, cord in the sidewall compliments the tyre package.  Keep your family safe and avoid low quality tyres.
