Heavy loads or towing sometimes require extra help in the form of suspension airbags. Airbags can help stabilize the handling of a vehicle when towing or loaded by retaining the normal ride height when loaded.
There are three main catergories of suspension. Either your vehicle is leaf sprung, coil sprung or is already supported by airbags as factory equipment. Aftermarket airbag fitment available for 4WD applications covers mainly coil and leaf springs.
The first is a bag that fits inside the rear coil springs of most 4X4 vehicles. Air pressure is adjusted via left and right valves similar to pumping up a tyre. Another variant is a complete coil replacement system with a dedicated airbag which can have a more sofisticated in cab control system. Leaf sprung vehicles usually have a bolt in airbag that replaces the bump stop between the spring saddle and chassis. This system can also be setup as an external pump up or in cab control.
