Vehicle recovery is one of those inconveniences that can make or break your adventure. There have been countless stories of people with all types of four-wheel drives that have been stuck for hours or have in fact lost vehicles because they didn’t have the correct recovery equipment.

At CTO Industries we know the only time you’ll ever need a Winch is when you’re stuck. Although this might seem silly to say, you wouldn’t believe the amount of people who race out and purchase an incorrect size, or poor quality, winch for their vehicle.

This is why we use only Warn and Carbon Winches, both extensively tested in the lab and in the field, low failure rate, high performance, and sure to keep your adventure on track!

Here’s how we suggest you choose the correct Winch.

Look for the capacity of the Winch and make sure it is 1.5 x 2 times the capacity of the weight of your vehicle. So, for example a Ram 1500 GVM is 3330kg, so you would need a Winch rated a minimum of 5000kg(11050lb) or for a Jeep JK 4 door you would need a 3900kg(8600lb) rated Winch.

Handy Hint:  Winch line pull ratings are calculated off the first layer of rope on the winch drum.  As the rope layers increase the rated line pull decreases. If the full capacity of the winch is required for vehicle recovery it is highly recommended to pay out as much line as possible to maximize the pulling power of the winch.

Add extra to the rating if you have a GVM upgrade.

Go for a well-known brand that is synonymous with reliability.

Look for the controller that will suit your style.

Go for Rope not Steel Wire, either is good, Rope is lighter.

Understand your application, the more the hard core the higher the rating you need.

Stay away from poorly backed brands.

Once you’ve settled on the best choice for your Winch you can then grab yourself Recovery Gear, CTO Industries stock and supply.
