Adventure Destinations: Innamincka, Cooper Creek SA

  • By CTO Admin

Not far from the geographic centre of Australia lies the tiny outpost town of Innamincka. The area has plenty of interesting history and is famous for the ill fated Burke and Wills Expedition of 1860. Innamincka and Cooper Creek, in the vast wilderness of Australia's central deserts, can be accessed from several different directions. From the south, travel the Strezelecki Track. From the East, either Strezelecki Road from Thargomindah QLD or through Camerons Corner from Tiboobura NSW.....and in the north, from Birdsville. Each approach has it's own rewards in outback travel. Intriguing differences in terrain from the sand of the Cobler Desert and the iron stone of Sturts Stony Desert to the dry creekbeds of the channel country.

Points of interest are Burke's grave and the Dig Tree to the north east of the township and Will's grave to the west. It's well worth the effort reviewing the story of the Burke and Wills expedition before a central desert trip. Empathy for the effort and hardship that these explorers indured is better understood after experiencing the countryside first hand. Luckily ,these days, our air conditioned modern 4WD vehicles make short work of the expansive, harsh terrain.

Good camping is available along the Cooper Creek under the shade of the magnificent River Red Gums. There is a pub at Innamincka with fuel and stores available. It's a great place to set up a base camp for short day trips around the area or just kick back and soak in the isolation. Check your dirt road fuel consumption and make sure you have enough range to safely reach fuel stops along the way. Distance from Lyndhurst in the south is 472 kilometres.
