170km west of Alice Springs lies a rare impact site from a comet srtike over 140 milloins years old. Formed from an unimaginable titanic impact, Gosses Bluff's original crater rim has been estimated at about 22 km in diameter, but this has been eroded away over time. A 5km wide and 180m high central ring of uplifted sandstone hills is all that's left. The crater can be accessed from Alice Springs via Namatjira Drive Drive beyond Hermannsberg. Approaching the mountainous formation you can only wonder at the massive blast that must have occured to form such a crater. Only a small number of younger impact craters are known to exist anywhere in the world, and Gosses Bluff is one of these.
